Located in a developing area of Kalavad Road, Rajkot, this project was about restructuring and designing a penthouse duplex apartment consisting of 11th and the 12th floor. Total area under consideration was approximately 4500 sq.ft.
The brief from client suggested that they would want to have a feel of a bungalow while living in an apartment building. We interpreted it as bungalow on 11th floor. The design processes focussed on reinterpreting spaces of ground floor connected to a garden and a living area. Interweaving, informal living spaces where family usually flock around and formal living spaces with the dining area was one of the design challenges of the project.
To get a feel of one space, and yet separated, lead to some key architectural changes. Keeping in mind the structural grid, realignment of walls helped connect the two terraces on 11th floor with the inside spaces. Functional aspects were taken care of through recreating puja room and a general washroom on 11th Floor. Along with guest room on 11th Floor, formal living, kitchen, dining and home theatre room became sought of a public realm of the house. All the bedrooms for the family members were designed on 12th floor.
Internal stairs connected 11th and a 12th floor. All the rooms of 12th floor are bedrooms having lounge area, study area, sleeping space, reading areas, and attached washrooms with wardrobes. Again, as done on the 11th floor, realigning walls on 12th floor helped create generous spaces for luxury washrooms and dress spaces. Master bedroom was designed to have large common wash spaces between ‘his and her’ separate dress and walk – in wardrobe space.
Materials for the floors, walls and furnishing were carefully decided to not only fulfil client aspiration, but also to introduce a touch of luxury through details. The entire project consisting of structural realignment to interior design to design of furniture was finished in only 6 months.
