Disability audit is one of the ways to find out how much a building can cater to the disabled citizen in furnishing the relevant services. Disability audit under the present report covers ten buildings most of them under governmental / semi-governmental control. Only one building in this report is a privately managed public building.

The audit was done based on a matrix prepared that checked various areas of the building against all various disabilities under the scope of this report. Appropriate photographs help in explaining the shortfall with regards disability access. In addition, issue of fire safety is highlighted although it is technically outside the purview of this report; it does affect the disabled more than the normal users.

The report highlights the measures taken in various buildings to make them disabled friendly and also points out shortcomings in making them completely barrier free.

BACKGROUND

Barrier free environment is one which enables people with disabilities to move about safely and freely and to use the facilities with the built environment. The ultimate goal of barrier free design is to provide an environment that supports the independent functioning of individuals so that they can get to, and participate without assistance in their day to day activities.

The report highlights the measures taken in various buildings to make themdisabled friendly and also points out shortcomings in making them completely barrier free.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation took the initiative to conduct a survey of some of the public buildings under its administration as well some managed by trusts with regards accessibility. The list of buildings is in no way comprehensive nor is it priority based. Care was taken to study as many building types as possible in the limited time available to prepare the report.
